From time-to-time we will publish articles written by our own pastors or from other sources in the wider Christian community. We will also publish links to articles of interest that we find on the internet.

Quite rightly, we stand with the historic Christian Church represented in the general "ecumenical" Creeds such as those of Nicaea (325 AD) and Chalcedon (451 AD). In particular, we stand with the Reformation Churches. We believe that the more substantial Creeds of the Protestant Reformation are the truest expression of orthodox Christian faith. So we esteem the Westminster Confession 1646, The Belgic Confession 1561, The Canons of Dort 1619, and the Heidelberg Catechism 1563. But what about the Apostles' Creed? It has the advantage of being short and memorable, and some churches still recite it every Sunday. However, there are some good reasons for being hesitant, especially that unfortunate phrase "He descended into hell". There are three issues that need to be faced: (1) Is that clause original and authentic?, (2) What does it mean anyway?, (3) Should we confess it today?

The "Jehovah’s Witnesses" were back in the news recently when one of their members made the wise decision to defy the JW dogma banning blood transfusions. His wife had lost most of her blood after childbirth in Melbourne, and was within an hour or so of death, when he permitted the doctors to give her the life saving blood.
How sad that this new father in Melbourne expressed his fear that he is not going to heaven because he did this! If only his religion taught him that heaven is assured for all who have sincere faith in Christ: but the Watchtower denies the true Christ. A spokesman for the JW’s made the Bible look odious by claiming that it was not the Watchtower Society that invented the edict against blood transfusions. He said "It is in the Bible".

One of the frequent names of God is the majestic term El Elyon, "Most High God". It tells us about the most exalted Being, the One who made the universe out of nothing and who is to be feared for His intrinsic greatness. "How awesome is the Lord Most High; He is a great King over all the earth" (Ps 47:2). The essence of folly is to "despise the counsel of the Most High" (Ps 107:11). Nebuchadnezzar learned the hard way that "the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses" (Daniel 5:21).

"It’s the most popular book this year" said the proprietor of our local ‘Bookworld’ store. She was talking about The Bible Code, by the agnostic journalist Michael Drosnin (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 1977). It is also right up there with the most foolish books of the year. Sadly, lots of Christians are interested too, asking if the book has something good, some new word of God for us. So it acts as an index to warn us that such basic truths as the doctrine of Scripture cannot be assumed among church goers.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for the average person to know the answer to that question. We confess as Christians that the Bible is the word of God. What the Bible actually says is what God actually says. But there is a modern paradox: with so many different Bibles it has never been harder to be certain of the precise utterance of God. Two aspects of this problem are overdue for a plea for sanity. |
